What Is the 'Ready to Burn' Wood Certification Scheme?

What Is the ‘Ready to Burn’ Wood Certification Scheme?

If you’ve been researching firewood for your log burner, open fire, or outdoor fire pit, chances are you’ve come across the phrase “Ready to Burn”. But what does it actually mean? And more importantly, why should it matter to you as a firewood customer?

In this blog, we’ll explain the ‘Ready to Burn’ certification scheme, who created it, why it exists, and how choosing certified firewood benefits your home, your appliance, and the environment. At JD Logs, we’re proud to be part of this scheme, and we believe all customers deserve to understand why it matters.

What Is the 'Ready to Burn' Wood Certification Scheme?

What Is the ‘Ready to Burn’ Scheme?

The ‘Ready to Burn’ wood certification scheme is a UK government-backed initiative designed to improve air quality and reduce harmful emissions caused by burning poor-quality firewood.

Launched by Woodsure, the UK’s only wood fuel quality assurance scheme, ‘Ready to Burn’ certifies firewood and briquettes that have a moisture content of 20% or less. This is the ideal level of moisture for efficient, clean-burning wood that produces high heat and minimal smoke.

From May 2021, it became a legal requirement in England for all wood sold in volumes under 2m³ to be certified under the ‘Ready to Burn’ scheme. This applies to both hardwood and softwood logs.

Why Was It Introduced?

Burning wet or unseasoned wood can cause a range of problems, not just for your appliance, but also for public health and the environment. The scheme was introduced for several key reasons:

1. To Reduce Air Pollution

Wet firewood produces more smoke and harmful pollutants, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5). These particles are linked to serious respiratory and cardiovascular issues.

2. To Protect Stoves and Chimneys

Unseasoned wood creates a build-up of tar and creosote, which can lead to chimney blockages or fires and reduce the lifespan of your stove or flue.

3. To Help Customers Make Informed Choices

Before the scheme, it was hard to know whether firewood had been properly dried. The ‘Ready to Burn’ logo makes it simple for customers to identify logs that are safe and efficient to use.

4. To Support the UK’s Clean Air Strategy

This certification supports the UK government’s efforts to improve air quality by reducing domestic emissions through better fuel standards.

What Are the Requirements for ‘Ready to Burn’ Certification?

For a supplier to become certified, they must meet strict standards set by Woodsure. These include:

At JD Logs, all of our kiln-dried logs are fully certified and meet or exceed these criteria. We conduct regular quality checks to maintain this standard.

What Are the Benefits of Buying ‘Ready to Burn’ Firewood?

Whether you’re heating your home or lighting an outdoor fire pit, choosing certified firewood makes a noticeable difference:

Efficient Burning

Dry logs ignite faster, burn hotter, and produce more heat, giving you better performance and less hassle.

Lower Smoke and Cleaner Chimneys

Less moisture means cleaner burns, reducing the amount of smoke and deposits in your chimney or flue.

Protects Your Stove and Warranty

Many stove manufacturers specify that only kiln-dried or seasoned wood should be used. Using the wrong type of firewood could void your warranty.

Cost-Effective Heating

Certified logs burn more efficiently, meaning you use fewer logs to generate the same amount of heat.

Peace of Mind

The Ready to Burn label guarantees that your firewood meets national quality standards. No more guesswork or damp disappointments.

Is Kiln-Dried Wood Better Than Seasoned Wood?

Both kiln-dried and well-seasoned logs can meet the Ready to Burn standard, but kiln-dried wood offers greater consistency.

At JD Logs, our kiln-dried firewood is dried in controlled conditions to achieve a moisture level below 20%, regardless of the season. Seasoned logs, by contrast, rely on natural air drying and may have variable moisture content depending on how and where they’re stored.

If you’re looking for reliability, strong heat output, and long-term storage flexibility, kiln-dried logs are the best choice.
